Legal Support Professional or Paralegal

Legal Aid of Arkansas seeks a legal support professional or paralegal for its Medical-Legal Partnership office located at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This non-exempt level employee will assist in the provision of legal assistance to low-income persons. 

Legal Aid of Arkansas is a public interest, not-for-profit law firm dedicated to assuring equal access to justice in civil matters for low-income Arkansans through legal representation, advocacy, community partnerships, education, and outreach. Through its medical-legal partnership, legal aid attorneys work on-site at healthcare institutions to help address the social and environmental factors that influence the health of low-income Arkansans. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct client interviews, facilitate referral process, including maintaining case records and tracking statuses and outcomes, investigate and prepare cases for placement with attorneys, prepare client correspondence and case pleadings.
  2. Assist Legal Aid pro bono team with volunteer recruitment, orientation, coordination, and appreciation efforts.
  3. Work cooperatively with Legal Aid staff and hospital partners on program-related projects, attend meetings and collaborate with health care providers and other hospital staff.
  4. Compile program-related data on referrals, case status, and outcomes; create related reports and publications.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Skills Required: 

  1. Strong planning, problem solving, and organizing skills.

  2. Effective oral and written communicative abilities. 

  3. Positive interpersonal skills to deal with employees, volunteers from private bar & clients. 

  4. Highly skilled in Microsoft 365 and the use of databases.

  5. Experience drafting pleadings and client correspondence.

  6. Second language skills a plus and may trigger salary incentive, but not required. 

 

Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, paralegal certification, or equivalent education with a minimum of three years practical experience in the legal profession.

  2. Prior experience or training in the medical field preferred, ability to comply with medical and legal privacy standards a plus.

  3. Valid driver’s license, liability insurance, and access to an automobile.
