Patricia
Patricia lives in Holly Grove, a small town in Eastern Arkansas that has gained national attention because of Lucy Love, an “American Idol” contestant. Patricia has been receiving Medicaid for more than thirty years. When she was employed, she became ill and was unable to continue working. She was subsequently approved for Supplemental Security Income (“SSI”) due to her onset disability. She continues to suffer from severe hip and back pain, such that it is difficult for her to move around. The pain can be so intense that she must take prescribed Hydrocodone to relieve the pain. Thanks to Medicaid, Patricia has no out-of-pocket costs associated with her medication.
Patricia has an adult son who lives with her and is also receiving disability. The two of them try and manage on their small monthly income. She does not have transportation and must rely on others for assistance in making her doctor’s appointments. Patrcia does not always get free rides, she often must pay someone to drive her around to her appointments and programs Unfortunately, her transportation problem is common for those living in in the Delta and in small rural towns. Having to pay someone to get around can be a serious financial burden, so Patricia does her best to accomplish as many tasks as possible during one trip. Patricia knows that if she had to pay for her medication along with paying someone to take her to the doctor, it would absolutely be financially devastating.
