Star was living a normal life in Marvell, AR when her mother noticed that her breasts were becoming larger. Star was unable to walk at times due to the pain in her breast.  When she walked, she had to hold one breast up with her hand to alleviate the pain.  Star went to the local hospital and was told that she had an infection in her breast.  Her mom knew that her symptoms were not normal and made an appointment for her at UAMS in Little Rock.  On September 13, 2021, Star was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Shortly after that, on September 21, 2021, she was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer.  Mastectomy was not recommended due to what is known as metastasis - the development of secondary malignant growths near the primary site.  

Star is scheduled for a CT scan and MRI to determine if the Cancer has spread to her bones. She currently receives radiation treatment.  She was taking Chemotherapy but says that she started swelling and the Chemo was discontinued until a later time. She currently goes to Oncology once a month. Since she is in constant pain, her doctor has also scheduled her for Pain Management Treatment. 

Star’s days are spent mostly resting and trying to manage her pain.  She takes Oxycodone and Methadone.  Both medications cause extreme drowsiness and fatigue. Star also takes medication for Peripheral Neuropathy which may be caused by chemotherapy. 

Star started receiving Medicaid in the form of Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2022.  If she did not have Medicaid, she would not be able to pay for her visits to Oncology, radiation treatment, chemo her medications.  Not having to pay for treatment is a lifted burden.  Star cannot imagine how she would make it without Medicaid.  She currently lives with her mom who assists her with personal needs, trips to the doctor and with this interview. The Cancer is enough for her to deal with, and she does not want the added pressure of not being insured for her medical expenses.  Survival depends on her treatment and Star is taking one day at a time.  She is thankful for her mom, sister and Medicaid.  

Some days it may be hard for Star to smile, but through the pain and anguish, she will continue to have a smile and song in her heart.  This lady will put on her gloves and fight Cancer until the battle is won!
